About The Position

This position provides Medical Support Assistant services at the Pawnee Indian Health Center. The primary duties involve interviewing patients to gather demographic and insurance information, including authorization for billing. The assistant helps patients complete new or updated forms for the RPMS/BPRM Practice Management Suite and determines patient eligibility for healthcare by verifying tribal membership according to IHS guidelines. The role also includes identifying services requiring prior approval, obtaining necessary signatures for alternate resources and purchased referred care, and maintaining/updating alternate resources data for accurate billing. Additionally, the Medical Support Assistant collects third-party health cards, explains billing programs (Medicare, Medicaid, private/commercial insurance) to beneficiaries, and initiates or reactivates patient health records within the RPMS/BPRM Practice Management Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients to obtain pertinent patient registration information, i.e. demographic and insurance information and authorization to enable the FBO to bill for health care services provided.
  • Assist patients in completing new or updated forms for the RPMS/BPRM Practice Management Suite.
  • Determine eligibility of patients seeking health care by obtaining the certificate of Indian blood or other documentary proof of tribal membership according to IHS guidelines.
  • Identify those patients whose healthcare benefits are subject to prior approval to determine the extent of healthcare for outpatient services.
  • Obtain signatures for file on required form for alternate resources and purchased referred care prior to patients being seen in the clinics for billing purposes and/or PRC eligibility.
  • Maintains, key-enters, updates and verifies all alternate resources data necessary for patient registration and for accurate billing through the use of RPMS/BPRM Practice Management Suite.
  • Make corrections as necessary to improve the patient registration system.
  • Collects third party recipient health cards, obtains photocopies of the card and explains the program to the beneficiaries, i.e. why Medicare, Medicaid and/or private/commercial insurance will be billed for the services they receive at the IHS facility.
  • Interview patient to obtain information to initiate a new health record and/or communicate to Medical Records to reactivate a retired/stored record.
  • Enter all information in the RPMS/BPRM Practice management Suite.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
