About The Position

The Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for providing specialized administrative patient support within the Office of Community Care at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System in Biloxi, Mississippi. This role involves coordinating care with community partners and the patient care team, managing complex systems for follow-up care, and ensuring efficient clinic operations. The AMSA plays a critical role in enhancing patient access to care and improving the overall patient experience.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work, or one year above high school, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Ability to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive information into electronic health records and scheduling systems.
  • Experience in scheduling medical appointments in a clinical setting and providing customer service.

  • Experience in Consult Management/Medical Office Management.

Responsibilities

  • Recommends changes to existing clinic procedures based on current administrative guidelines.
  • Coordinates care with community partners, the patient care team, and the Veteran.
  • Reviews clinic appointment availability.
  • Prepares correspondence to notify patients of results.
  • Manages multiple complex systems for follow-up care such as consults and tests.
  • Screens new consults for eligibility, specialty service requested, duplication, and appropriateness of sending patients to community providers.
  • Contacts veterans by telephone to explain pending or new consult requests.
  • Educates providers and team members about patients' medical care through various communication methods.
