About The Position

The successful incumbent for this position will work as a Medical Laboratory Technologist II for the Department of Health in Pinellas and will be responsible for leading the coordination of lab functions at five Health Department Clinic sites and five School Based Clinic sites. The successful incumbent will be based at the St. Petersburg Center and will also be responsible for providing client lab services as needed. Incumbent must be technically qualified and experienced, have knowledge of lab requirements under the CLIA Waiver, and be licensed or willing to become licensed as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist by the State of Florida. Incumbent will have daily interaction with clients and staff from other programs and should possess excellent internal and external customer service skills.

Requirements

• Skilled in the use of Medical Laboratory equipment
• Ability to perform laboratory procedures including venipuncture
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Ability to effectively communication verbally and in writing utilizing approved DOH abbreviations
• Ability to use an electronic medical record
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Ability to work with persons of different race, language, culture or socioeconomic status
• Associate's degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
• Licensed as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Technologist by the State of Florida. If not currently licensed, willing to obtain and incur all costs of obtaining licensure.
• One year experience performing lab procedures including venipuncture.
• Experience performing lab proficiency testing
• Willingness to travel to multiple sites for compliance monitoring and lab coverage as needed.
• Experience developing written processes and procedures in any type of setting
• At least one year experience using an electronic health record

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with the requirements of CLIA waived lab tests
• Bachelor degree in chemical, physical biological or clinical laboratory science or a medical technology from an accredited institution
• Experience leading staff or processes in any type of setting

Responsibilities

• Performs routine lab procedures in accordance with established lab guidelines.
• Lab procedures include: venipuncture, urine collection and finger sticks for all age groups.
• Performs CLIA waived testing, including but not limited to urinalysis, pregnancy testing, hemoglobin, Rapid HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis C testing.
• Records lab results in the electronic medical record and immediately reports abnormal/critical results to a provider.
• Prepares specimens for transport, performs daily maintenance and cleaning of lab equipment, maintains laboratory logs, and performs proficiency testing.
• Stocks and orders lab supplies as needed.
• Works with Center Manager and Nursing Supervisor to ensure a smooth client flow for clients of all programs.
• Works closely with the Medical Lab Director and acts as a lead worker to ensure clinic and school based labs are following established lab procedures.
• Lead worker duties include developing and maintaining standardized lab procedures/manuals and coordination of training for all new and existing lab staff.
• Monitors all lab sites for compliance with established lab procedures.
• Serves on quality teams as a lab representative.
