About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The primary purpose of this position is to conduct Serum Agglutination and Agar Gel-Immunodiffusion diagnostic tests for the detection of Mycoplasma synoviae, Mycoplasma gallisepticum, and Avian Influenza. This position also performs parasitologic exams on select specimens. Other duties include providing test results to producers and veterinarians submitting specimens for evaluation; data entry into a computerized laboratory information system for reporting test results; perform quality assurance and quality control monitoring for serologic techniques; and maintain an inventory of reagents and consumables for diagnostic testing.

Requirements

  • Intermediate knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and the appropriate safety precautions to avoid infections
  • Ability to perceive colors normally
  • Ability to interpret abnormal results
  • Ability to research and develop procedures and methods and ability to implement necessary changes
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution; or Associate degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory; or Completion of a Certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities
