About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The Veterinary Division protects the health of the state’s livestock and poultry population through the administration of regulatory animal health programs and disease testing conducted by the North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System. The primary purpose of this position is to prepare submitted tissue samples for microscopic examinations. This process includes gross examination and cutting of tissues for fitting into cassettes, embedding processed tissues in paraffin, cutting paraffin embedded tissues into thin tissue sections on the microtome for transfer to glass slides, operation of a variety of histology equipment, and special stains. Other duties include preparation of solutions for staining, computer data entry, and communication with clients as needed to resolve discrepancies between submission forms and samples.

Requirements

  • General theoretical knowledge of the principles of histology
  • Ability to use histology equipment.
  • General knowledge or familiarity with the variety of laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to distinguish between colors in order to effectively read test results.
  • Ability to lift 30–40-pound containers of chemicals.
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution; or Associate degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory; or Completion of a Certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
