About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs routine and complex laboratory testing to provide accurate, timely data used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury. Responsibilities are performed according to the individual’s level of education, training, certification, and scope of practice. Pay Range: MLT: $25.61-35.90 per hour based on experience and qualifications MLS: $31.45-47.17 per hour based on experience and qualifications Shift Differentials: Weekday Nights - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - 7:00 pm - 7:00 am - $3.00 per hour Weekend Days - Saturday, Sunday - 7:00 am - 7:00 pm - $3.50 per hour Weekend Nights - Friday, Saturday, Sunday - 7:00 pm - 7:00 am - $5.00 per hour

Requirements

  • MLT: Associate’s degree clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution. One year of previous work experience in a laboratory setting is required. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
  • MLS: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution. At least one year of work experience in a laboratory setting. Additional coursework in medical technology is preferred. Must be certified-eligible (obtain within six months of assignment in role) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or Equivalent.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including ability to adapt style to fit various patient needs (age, physical needs, etc.).
  • Advanced skill in phlebotomy processes on all age groups (infant to geriatric).
  • Ability to engage with and work with other personnel and teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Experience in working in classified/confidential work settings; ensuring only approved information is shared or released when approved.
  • Ability to use office equipment (personal computer, fax, copier, various software applications).
  • Note: An acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.
  • Must obtain annual flu vaccination and any job-specific immunizations.
  • Required to submit to TB-QuantiFERON test.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist Certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or Equivalent

  • Additional coursework in medical technology is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform chemical analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluid, and other body fluids to identify normal and abnormal components.
  • Analyze blood cells using microscopic techniques and established laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare blood products for transfusion by performing blood grouping, typing, and compatibility testing (as qualified).
  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using proper aseptic technique.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment operates correctly through calibration, routine maintenance, and inventory management.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies by monitoring stock levels and anticipating needs.
  • Conserve laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies efficiently.
  • Prepare, analyze, and summarize laboratory results; document and communicate critical values to physicians and nursing staff promptly.
  • Perform quality control activities and sign off on QC reports as required (MLS level).
  • Conduct competency assessments when directed by the Laboratory Director (MLS level).
  • Provide laboratory and medical technology information to healthcare staff as needed.
  • Adhere to infection control, hazardous waste, and patient identification policies to protect patients and staff.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all privacy regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support laboratory operations.
