About The Position

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies. This role supports all phases of the laboratory workflow, including Pre Analytic, Analytic, and Post Analytic functions. The technician may share responsibility for assigning work to self and coworkers in the absence of a supervisor or lead. All duties must comply with CLIA standards, including requirements outlined in 42CFR493.1495 for high complexity testing and 42CFR493.1425 for moderate complexity testing personnel.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and successful completion of a Medical Technology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation CAHEA, or an Associate degree in a laboratory related science such as Biology or Chemistry with equivalent training and experience such as military laboratory training.
  • Six months of full time clinical laboratory experience required. Clinical laboratory experience obtained during an accredited Medical Technology program meets this requirement.
  • Appropriate licensure or certification as required by state and federal regulations.
  • Working knowledge of general types of laboratory equipment (centrifuge, microscope, etc.) keyboard, LIS, calculators, fax, auto analyzers.
  • Basic computer skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs only those moderate and high complexity tests authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director and requiring skills consistent with the individual’s education, training, and experience.
  • Follows established procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
  • Performs proficiency testing and maintains records demonstrating that proficiency samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adheres to quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Follows established procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels.
  • Identifies issues that may affect test performance or results and either corrects them or promptly notifies the appropriate supervisor or the Laboratory Medical Director.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Produces consistently accurate work with strong attention to detail and promotes high quality standards among peers.
  • Communicates clearly and appropriately, using sound judgment in determining what information to share and how to convey it.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision, follows written and verbal instructions, seeks guidance when needed, and makes decisions in the absence of a supervisor or director.
  • Demonstrates the job knowledge and technical skills required to perform duties competently in daily operations.
  • Applies all safety protocols consistently, avoids shortcuts that increase risk, and actively identifies and reports unsafe practices.
