About The Position

Join the UPMC West Shore Laboratory Team! UPMC West Shore is seeking part-time Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) to support our day-shift operations (4:00 AM-12:30 PM, 6:00 AM-2:30 PM, or 7:00 AM-3:30 PM), including every third weekend and rotating holidays. In this role, you'll perform accurate routine and STAT laboratory testing that directly impacts patient diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes-all while working alongside and under the supervision of experienced Medical Laboratory Scientists. Requirements

  • Medical Lab Technician:
  • Associate's degree in a laboratory science with MLT certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution OR
  • Bachelor of Science degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience OR
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high-complexity testing
  • Medical Lab Scientist:
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA-accredited Medical Technology program OR
  • Bachelor of Science degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and ASCP categorical certification OR
  • Bachelor of Science degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and at least two years of experience in a role equivalent to an MLT in a clinical laboratory
  • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • New York license required for NY locations.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred: Minimum 1 year of hospital laboratory experience; familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems
  • Preferred: 1 year of hospital laboratory experience; knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems

Responsibilities

  • Communicates professionally with all laboratory customers; responds promptly and courteously to inquiries.
  • Adheres to all laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, QA standards, and proficiency testing requirements.
  • Collects and processes specimens (including phlebotomy when required) following proper protocols to ensure sample integrity.
  • Performs qualitative and quantitative testing accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Recognizes critical or abnormal results and takes appropriate action; identifies factors affecting test accuracy and initiates corrective measures.
  • Troubleshoots issues with instruments, methodology, specimens, or supplies and follows established escalation protocols.
  • Enters accurate patient information and orders into the laboratory information system while verifying sample adequacy.
  • Performs Moderately Complex and Waived testing independently; performs High Complexity testing with required oversight.
  • Conducts and documents quality control, maintains equipment, performs minor repairs, and manages reagents and supply inventory.
  • Follows all safety and compliance guidelines, maintains confidentiality, demonstrates dependability, and assists in training new staff.
