About The Position

Harborview Medical Center’s Interpreter Services Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Medical Interpreter, Tigrinya. As the region's only Level I Trauma and verified burn center, Harborview Medical Center is a comprehensive healthcare facility owned by King County and operated by UW Medicine. It is dedicated to providing specialized care for a broad spectrum of patients from throughout the Pacific Northwest, including the most vulnerable residents of King County. Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent AND two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting AND medical interpreter certification or qualification either from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oral, sight and written interpretation for target language(s)
  • Transmit information accurately between patient and provider or staff
  • Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff
  • Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter
  • Provide sight translation in the presence of a provider and/or other medical staff
  • Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms
