A Medical Assistant performs administrative and/or clinical tasks to support the work of the physician and other healthcare professionals. This position assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management while maintaining strict patient confidentiality. The role involves updating and filing patient medical records, filling out insurance forms, taking medical histories, recording vital signs, and efficiently documenting medical information using electronic applications or forms. Medical Assistants explain treatment procedures, prepare patients for examinations, collect and prepare laboratory specimens, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments. They may also assist with wound care and cast care, handle correspondence, schedule appointments, and arrange for hospital and lab services. The position includes assisting with simple patient teaching regarding procedures, tests, and medications, maintaining patient flow, and assisting with callbacks for patient care. If certified/registered, they may authorize drug refills and telephone prescriptions. Medical Assistants ensure treatment rooms are equipped and clean, organize and prioritize duties, interact professionally and empathetically with patients, comply with patient information laws, and ensure patient safety. They also participate in committee activities and perform other assigned duties, with regular and reliable attendance being essential.
