About The Position

This Medical Assistant position is for Atrium Health Concord Urgent Care, operating on a part-time basis with specific scheduling demands. The role requires working five 12-hour shifts within a 6-week scheduling period, including one weekend day within those five shifts, and one major and one minor holiday. Weekday availability is a must. The Medical Assistant adheres to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care. This includes performing rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and various screenings. The Medical Assistant assists providers with or performs procedures as ordered, and handles lab-related duties including venipuncture, specimen collection, labeling, packing, preparation of lab orders, and results tracking. They also perform Point of Care testing (POCT) and complete Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests. Administering medications and vaccines safely is a key responsibility. Additional duties include medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals. The role requires cross-training for duties relevant to the specialty or clinic practice within the Medical Assistant's scope. Effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation are expected. The Medical Assistant is also responsible for maintaining a clean work environment, ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned, and that equipment and supplies are in working order and areas are appropriately stocked. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, understanding principles of growth and development over the life span to assess patient status and identify age-specific needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest divisions).
  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Assistant, or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years (for IL/WI Divisions, Floyd & Navicent).
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest divisions).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required (for IL/WI Divisions, Floyd & Navicent).
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest divisions).
  • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Allied Health (AAH), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Health Career Association (NHA), (MCMA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA) certification may be required (for Wake Forest).
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas (for Wake Forest).
  • No Experience Required.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Cross trained to perform duties that are relevant to specialty or clinic practice within the scope of the Medical Assistant.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
