About The Position

The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support services within the Health Services Units at FCI/FDC Tallahassee. This role supports physicians, mid-level practitioners, and nursing staff in delivering routine and urgent medical care in a secure correctional healthcare environment. The Medical Assistant must work independently, follow established clinical protocols, and maintain strict adherence to security and privacy requirements.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program
  • Active Medical Assistant license in the State of Florida
  • Minimum of two (2) years documented experience as a Medical Assistant
  • CPR/AED certification (American Heart Association – Basic Life Support)
  • Ability to perform duties independently without technical supervision
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse adult population
  • Must successfully complete a federal background investigation
  • Must pass drug screening
  • Must attend required institution orientation and security training
  • Must comply with all institutional security, privacy, and conduct regulations
  • Must maintain professional boundaries and follow inmate interaction protocols

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and document patient medical histories and vital signs
  • Schedule appointments and maintain daily sick-call lists
  • Assist physicians and mid-level providers during examinations and minor procedures
  • Perform venipuncture and collect laboratory specimens, including urinalysis
  • Operate EKG machines and other clinical or laboratory equipment
  • Provide basic first aid, preventive care, and patient education
  • Triage sick-call complaints and refer to nursing or provider staff as appropriate
  • Assist in urgent care settings when needed
  • Maintain exam room supplies and ensure infection control standards are followed
  • Conduct screening eye exams
  • Observe and report significant mental health or mood changes
  • Accurately document all patient encounters in medical records
  • Maintain professional conduct and situational awareness in a correctional setting
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Health Services leadership
