About The Position
The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support services within the Health Services Units at FCI/FDC Tallahassee. This role supports physicians, mid-level practitioners, and nursing staff in delivering routine and urgent medical care in a secure correctional healthcare environment. The Medical Assistant must work independently, follow established clinical protocols, and maintain strict adherence to security and privacy requirements.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program
- Active Medical Assistant license in the State of Florida
- Minimum of two (2) years documented experience as a Medical Assistant
- CPR/AED certification (American Heart Association â Basic Life Support)
- Ability to perform duties independently without technical supervision
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse adult population
- Must successfully complete a federal background investigation
- Must pass drug screening
- Must attend required institution orientation and security training
- Must comply with all institutional security, privacy, and conduct regulations
- Must maintain professional boundaries and follow inmate interaction protocols
Responsibilities
- Obtain and document patient medical histories and vital signs
- Schedule appointments and maintain daily sick-call lists
- Assist physicians and mid-level providers during examinations and minor procedures
- Perform venipuncture and collect laboratory specimens, including urinalysis
- Operate EKG machines and other clinical or laboratory equipment
- Provide basic first aid, preventive care, and patient education
- Triage sick-call complaints and refer to nursing or provider staff as appropriate
- Assist in urgent care settings when needed
- Maintain exam room supplies and ensure infection control standards are followed
- Conduct screening eye exams
- Observe and report significant mental health or mood changes
- Accurately document all patient encounters in medical records
- Maintain professional conduct and situational awareness in a correctional setting
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Health Services leadership
