About The Position

The Medical Assistant assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. This role involves interviewing patients, obtaining vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and recording information on patient charts. The Medical Assistant may also draw and collect blood samples, prepare specimens for laboratory analysis, and coordinate patient flow, appointments, procedures, tests, and referrals. Additional duties include triaging phone calls, calling in non-narcotic prescriptions as directed by a provider, communicating with patients and their families, and assisting with regulatory and compliance needs of the clinic. The position operates under the close supervision of a physician and clinic manager.

Requirements

  • Completion of a medical assistant program or 1 year experience in a clinical capacity
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Computer literate; skilled in use of Microsoft outlook, electronic health records and other software programs
  • BLS Required

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient care duties including proper patient identification, ensuring confidentiality (HIPAA), accurately documenting patient visit notes (chief complaint, history, vitals, immunizations, allergies, medications, nutrition, health/wellness), administering and documenting waived testing, preparing and cleaning exam rooms, maintaining supplies and equipment, preparing and administering medications, assisting physicians with minor surgical procedures, and providing basic clinical care measures to all age groups.
  • Coordinate patient care to ensure physician efficiency by managing patient schedules and wait times, instructing patients and families on diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and health/wellness issues, retrieving and sending patient health information in accordance with HIPAA, notifying patients of test results and treatment changes within 48 hours, calling in medication prescriptions, and coordinating diagnostic testing and communication with other healthcare providers.
  • Ensure quality by adhering to corporate compliance procedures, accrediting body standards, and ethical/religious directives, understanding chemical hazards and MSDS information, taking correct actions during emergency situations, participating in quality improvement initiatives, observing and adhering to all policies, procedures, safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards, utilizing equipment and resources efficiently, and assuming personal responsibility for continuing education and professional development.
  • Contribute to clinical excellence and regulatory compliance by working with other medical assistants on documentation standards, assisting with oversight of regulatory processes (daily, weekly, monthly monitoring and compliance measurement), assisting with counting and ordering vaccines, medications, and clinical supplies, performing medical record auditing and determining documentation improvement strategies, and potentially providing training and orientation to new team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including using initiative to assist in overall practice operations (clerical duties), supporting practice efforts such as annual Flu Clinics, job-site projects, and community health events, and assisting with clerical tasks like answering phones, filing, preparing charts, managing referrals, verifying benefits, and coordinating patient paperwork (FMLA, back to work/school messages).
