About The Position

This position involves a comprehensive range of duties for a Medical Assistant in an OBGYN setting. Key responsibilities include direct patient care, clerical tasks, maintaining the clinical environment, and organizational duties. The role requires adherence to the MA scope of practice, especially in laboratory procedures. There is also a potential for lead responsibilities, including assisting with staffing, training, supervision, and delegation, and serving as an EMR Tech.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill patient care responsibilities including checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting with exam preparation, collecting patient history, performing screenings, assisting physicians/nurses with procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, and answering calls.
  • Provide safe, accurate, clinically competent direct care to patients.
  • Identify patient education needs in wellness or illness and provide appropriate information.
  • Communicate information to other members of the health care team.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities including sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, completing forms/requisitions, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, and managing/updating charts.
  • Fulfill environmental responsibilities including setting up instruments and equipment, cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment for infection control, cleaning sterilizer, ordering, sorting, storing supplies, and restocking exam/procedure rooms.
  • Fulfill organizational responsibilities including respecting/promoting patient rights and sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
  • Recognize patient abnormalities or urgent problems and seek appropriate assistance; respond appropriately to emergency codes.
  • Fulfill clinical medical assisting responsibilities such as medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving, checking vital signs or mensuration, physical examination preparations, clinical pharmacology, drug administration (including injections), prescription verifications, minor surgery assists (including surgical tray set-up, pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal), biohazard waste disposal and monitoring, therapeutic modalities, instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care.
  • Perform laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, quality control methods, CLIA-waived testing, capillary punctures and venipunctures, specimen handling (urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum), electrocardiography (including mounting), emergency triage, and first aid.
  • Adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory.
  • Assist the Medical Office Manager with staffing, training, supervising, and delegating assignments (if in a lead role).
  • Serve as the office’s EMR Tech (if in a lead role).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
