About The Position

A Medical Assistant Apprentice is responsible for learning the Medical Assistant trade at Intermountain Healthcare while attending a Medical Assistant Program. This position requires in-person classroom training as well as working in various clinics for the clinical rotations portion of the program. The Medical Assistant Program is 21 weeks long. After the program is completed, Intermountain Healthcare will assist in finding permanent placement as a Medical Assistant within one of their clinics. Selected candidates are required to sign a 2-year contract, and if they leave the program or prior to the 2-year mark, they will be required to pay back the cost of the program, which is $4,900.00. This is a highly competitive position, with only 10 people selected per cohort. As an apprentice, individuals will be responsible for a wide variety of clinical and administrative tasks under the direction and guidance of experienced professionals, allowing them to hone their skills under 'safety net' conditions to be fully prepared to enter the workforce as a competent, skilled professional.

Responsibilities

  • Learning the Medical Assistant trade at Intermountain Healthcare while attending a Medical Assistant Program
  • Always having clear lines of communication with their supervising team at IMH
  • Observing patient-oriented procedures under the direction and supervision of Tier II or Tier III Medical Assistant, Practice Manager, clinician, RN, or LVN throughout the different divisions at Intermountain Healthcare
  • Practicing with direct supervision the patient-oriented procedures
  • Reviewing with the mentor all areas of skills assessment improvement opportunities
  • Providing feedback to their Mentor on areas they may be struggling with so the mentor can work with the Apprentice to provide additional coaching or scenarios that allow for practice of skills
  • Being responsible for a wide variety of clinical and administrative tasks under the direction and guidance of experienced professionals
  • Being engaged on any guidance given and following the Code of Conduct
  • Following the guiding principles and values at IMH
  • Essential read-only use and navigation of the electronic medical records
  • Responsible for quality and continuous improvement within the job scope throughout all rotations
  • Consistently exhibiting behavior and communication skills that demonstrate IMH’s commitment to superior customer service, including quality, care, and concern with internal and external customers
  • Observing vital signs and other pertinent patient information while shadowing their mentor
  • Responsible for all actions/responsibilities as described in company-controlled documentation for this position
  • Contributing to and supporting the corporation's quality initiatives by adopting and communicating the corporation's quality improvement efforts
  • Using, protecting, and disclosing HCP patients’ protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards
  • Observing/viewing various procedures such as ear lavage, ECG, spirometry, injections, peak flows, pulse oximetry, breathing treatments, suture removals, wound dressings, vision/hearing tests, urine pregnancy tests, urine dips, blood glucose testing, and blood hemoglobin (hemocue) testing
  • Assisting clinicians with procedures that vary in levels of complexity
  • Shadowing mentee on patient on lab, radiology, and other procedure/testing preparations
  • Observing in visit closure with patient and clinicians for next steps for lab, x-ray, referrals, DME, etc.
  • Inquiring and being open-minded to learning the Medical Assistant trade throughout the organization
  • Observing the handling and delivery of patient service recovery methods
  • Participating regularly in skills aptitude training and evaluations
  • Participating regularly in site staff and department meetings, huddles, etc.
  • Maintaining and cleaning exam/treatment areas, specimen processing areas, and medical equipment with the support of the mentee
  • Stocking exam rooms, treatment/procedure rooms, specimen processing areas, and nursing stations with the support of the mentee
  • Participating in Quality Improvement projects
  • Escalating potential emergency situations to the appropriate level
