Medical Assistant Ambulatory
About The Position
The Medical Assistant (MA) at Sanford Health functions within pre-defined scope of practice guidelines per state location. In an ambulatory care setting, the MA collects subjective and objective health status data from patients or caregivers and communicates this data to the health care provider. They participate in patient care by contributing data to licensed health care professionals and following through on the patient's plan of care under the direction of the provider. The MA also communicates the provider's written instructions for care to the patient or caregiver. This role involves caring for patients across the lifespan in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as patients move through care settings. The MA performs a variety of duties under the direct supervision of a licensed medical professional.
Requirements
- Must be a graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant program
- Nationally certified or registered as a Medical Assistant (MA) through a nationally approved certification program (e.g., American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA), or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), etc.)
- Registration (RMA) obtained through the American Medical Technologists (AMT) also acceptable
- For North Dakota (ND): registration as an MAIII through the ND Board of Nursing (if not held at time of hire, 4 months to obtain)
- For North Dakota (ND): must also be registered on the ND Board of Nursing UAP Registry if not possessing MAIII registration at time of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment
- Re-certification as required for BLS

- Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred
Responsibilities

- Participate in care for patients, across the lifespan, in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as patients move in and out of care settings
- Perform a variety of duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed to practice medicine
- Obtain vital signs
- Prepare patients for examinations
- Observe and report patient's signs or symptoms
- Perform point of care testing
