About The Position

The Student Engineer for Live Broadcast Media Production supports the ITS Media Services Central Engineering team across university media environments, including the OEC Multimedia Studio. This position provides hands-on technical experience working alongside full-time broadcast engineers and technicians to ensure reliable, high-quality live video production for academic, athletic, and institutional events. This role is ideal for an undergraduate or graduate student interested in media production engineering, broadcast technology, or professional media production systems. Students gain practical experience in a fast-paced, real-world production environment and may be scheduled for high-visibility events such as athletic competitions, commencements, and arena-hosted productions.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in broadcast engineering, media production technology, or related fields
  • Previous work in media engineering preferred (high school, college / university)
  • Ability to stay focused and attentive-willing to put personal phone aside on shift
  • Eagerness to learn emerging technologies and develop professional engineering skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well under pressure
  • Self-starter with curiosity, initiative, and problem-solving mindset
  • Availability to work some evenings, weekends, and high-visibility event schedules

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cameras, video switchers, replay, audio boards, or production control technology
  • Familiarity with live video workflows, routing systems, or IP-based media networks
  • Prior involvement in student media, athletics production, or technical theater

Responsibilities

  • Assist Engineers and Technicians with setup, calibration, operation, and maintenance of professional media production equipment
  • Support studio and field workflows, including cameras, routing systems, intercom, lighting, audio, and control systems
  • Contribute to troubleshooting efforts during live and recorded productions
  • Help monitor system performance and report issues proactively
  • Work as part of the engineering crew for the OEC Multimedia Studio as well as live Athletics events and other major university broadcasts
  • Assist with event-day setup/strike, cable management, gear prep, and signal flow verification
  • Follow direction in fast-paced, quickly changing production environments-remaining attentive and reliable at all times
  • Support daily operations in the OEC Multimedia Studio
  • Work directly with OEC Multimedia Studio Sr. Academic Media Producer to proactively attend to engineering needs in the studio facility
  • Work closely with full-time engineering staff and student crew members across Media Services, Athletics, STELAR, MIC and other university partners
  • Communicate clearly, proactively, and professionally in all production settings
  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented engineering environment
