About The Position

The Med-Tech AL position at Pasadena Highlands involves coordinating medication services with residents, pharmacies, and physicians, ensuring proper verification and dispensing. The role requires ordering and tracking medications, reporting changes in resident status or medication orders to the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director, and maintaining accurate resident records including MAR sheets and charts. The Med-Tech will also manage department supplies, act as a point of contact for external parties when directed, assist with department scheduling, and update various communication logs. A key part of the role is assisting residents with daily medications and treatments in compliance with policies and regulations, observing and documenting medication ingestion, and maintaining the cleanliness and security of medication areas. The position also involves assisting medication aides and caregivers and participating in narcotic counts at each shift change, reporting any discrepancies immediately. Familiarity with medical abbreviations and terms is essential.

Requirements

  • Must have experience in and demonstrate proficiency with the ability to perform job duties in a safe manner.
  • Must be proficient with communication skills, both written and oral, and must have the ability to read and write, and understand English.
  • Must be able to relate well with residents and families.

Responsibilities

  • At the direction of the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director, coordinate medication services with resident, pharmacy and physician.
  • Prior to resident’s arrival, inform the local pharmacy of the medication needs of new residents, verify medications and proper dosages with physician.
  • Medication is not to be dispensed until verification with physician is complete.
  • Order additional medications as needed and directed by the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director.
  • Track all orders for medication changes and/or refills.
  • Report to the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director any changes in medication order for residents, residents requiring extra services on a continual basis, and any changes in resident physical or mental status.
  • Assist the Resident Services Director in maintaining and providing accurate and inclusive records on all residents.
  • Complete Medication Administration Record (MAR) duplicate sheets for any changes in a particular resident’s medication.
  • Perform monthly audits/checks on all residents’ charts.
  • Assist with the processing of a new resident’s paperwork.
  • File and maintain resident files in a professional manner.
  • As requested, maintain an inventory of all department supplies.
  • Notify the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director timely and/or place supply orders, with a supervisor’s approval, when supply levels reach a pre-designated threshold.
  • As directed, act as the main point of contact for physicians, family members and vendors in the absence of the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director.
  • At the direction of the Health Services Director or Journey Program Director, assist with department scheduling including covering call-offs, vacations and the elimination of overtime.
  • As required, update the Caregiver Monthly Assignment Journal, Medication Technician Med List and 24 Hour Communication Log.
  • Assists residents with their daily medications, treatments and resident care as assigned and within the scope of practice, policy and procedures and Title 22 Regulations.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
  • Document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered, including reason(s) for refusal and notify supervisor and/or Executive Director.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and confidential resident medication and care records according to established procedure and state law.
  • Keep medicine carts and areas orderly, clean and appropriately stocked and locked.
  • Maintain upkeep and cleanliness of medicine carts and medication rooms.
  • Assist medication aides and caregivers in the performance of their job and assume caregiver activities when needed.
  • Participate in and complete narcotic count at beginning and end of each shift.
  • Report any and all discrepancies to Health Services Director or Journey Program Director immediately.
  • Prepare medication for distribution to residents as per the OMG Medication Policy.
  • Carry a radio and/or pager as directed by supervisor to ensure prompt response to resident issues.
  • Be familiar with the meaning and usage of common medical abbreviations, symbols and terms relative to the administration of medications as used by the residence, pharmacists and physicians.
