Goodyear leaders interact with students to help them begin to think about significant business issues and career options. Construction of Goodyear’s Lawton plant began in June 1977. The plant cured its first tire in February 1979. The plant is located on Goodyear Boulevard on the west side of Lawton, Oklahoma. Goodyear Lawton is 1,152 acres total—550 acres on the plant site including the plant facility, internal road and railroad transportation network, parking and Recreation Association complex. The Plant floor measures over three million square feet of production equipment, as well as maintenance, service and office areas. The main aisle, which serves as the transportation artery from the receiving doors to shipping, is almost one mile in length. There is an on-site family medical center that includes one medical doctor, pharmacy, vision clinic and physical therapy facility. The northern portion of the plant is devoted to the many activities governed by the plant’s voluntary Recreation Association. Goodyear-Lawton’s 2600 plant associates are our greatest asset. The success of our plant during its 45-year history is directly attributable to their ongoing efforts and dedication to servicing our customers and enhancing our plant’s competitive position. That’s why we call them the “Lawton Advantage.” Goodyear-Lawton is a non-union facility. It was established on a foundation of trust, integrity, respect and open communications. The plant’s internal communications program offers associates many avenues for receiving Information and asking questions about operations, the business environment and issues and policies that may affect them personally. Safety is emphasized as a value among all individual team members and is prominent in all aspects of plant operations. With an increased focus on personal health, associates can receive an annual health screening examination and important information on their health and medical condition. Coordinated by an all-volunteer committee, special events include an Easter egg hunt, Family Day (Memorial Day), Halloween safety carnival and Christmas party. The many activities for our associates and their families help to endorse the plant’s team spirit and pride. Recreation Association activities include an outdoor swimming pool, tennis and pickleball courts, jogging track, outdoor basketball, softball and flag football fields, fishing lake, skeet range, picnic pavilion, playground, exercise room and disc golf course. All of these activities are offered via a monthly fee paid by the plant’s associates and managed by a voluntary board of directors and commissioner for each activity. The Goodyear-Lawton plant has produced more than 800 million tires in its 45-year history. Production from the Goodyear-Lawton plant represents almost 40 percent of the total production of the North America business unit. Tires produced at the Goodyear-Lawton plant are shipped across North America and to locations around the world. The plant uses 180 different types of raw materials, from as far away as Saudi Arabia and China to as close as Stillwater, Ok. It receives a total of two million pounds of raw materials from 49 truck deliveries a day, supported by rail shipments of items such as oils and carbon black. The total average “turn over” time into a finished product is about four days. Six multi-level automated storage and retrieval system units are located throughout the plant. These store components and green tires (tires before curing) on a first-in, first-out basis for delivery to the next step in the production process. Tires are shipped exclusively by truck to meet the just-in-time demands by customers. Whenever possible, these are scheduled by direct ship to specific customer plants and facilities.
