The Mechanical Systems Designer is responsible for the design and development of complete mechanical systems for JLS automation equipment. This includes system layout, detailed machine design, and integration of robotic tooling, motion components, and structural assemblies. This role plays a critical part in delivering reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective solutions that meet customer and performance requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and progressive, relevant industry experience
  • 6+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in automation, packaging machinery, or industrial equipment
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience designing welded structures, machine assemblies, and precision mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, and assembly
  • Demonstrated ability to design and size pneumatic systems and mechanical power transmission components using appropriate engineering calculations and analysis
  • Strong understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM) and cost optimization
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robotics integration, end-of-arm tooling, or motion systems is preferred
  • Experience with hygienic design principles for food-grade or sanitary equipment applications, preferred

Responsibilities

  • Design complete mechanical systems including frames, weldments, end of arm tooling, and machine assemblies for robotic packaging equipment by developing 3D models, detailed drawings, and assembly layouts using SolidWorks CAD software
  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless system integration
  • Support project execution by meeting milestones and proactively communicating risks or design challenges
  • Mentor and support engineers and designers, and contribute to the onboarding and development of new team members
  • Perform and validate engineering calculations including component sizing, load and stress analysis, tolerance stack-ups, and dynamic system behavior to ensure system reliability, performance, and safety of mechanical systems
  • Develop and drive modular design and standardization strategies to improve scalability, reduce design time, and increase system consistency across product lines
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and IT teams to ensure alignment between CAD/PDM systems and ERP platforms for accurate BOM management and seamless data flow
  • Review designs for form, fit, function, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness
  • Translate customer requirements and specifications into practical, high-performance mechanical designs
  • Develop and maintain CAD standards, libraries, and best practices
  • Work with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to develop and refine design solutions
  • Interface with manufacturing and assembly teams to support builds and incorporate feedback into design improvements
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in design, cost reduction, and product performance
  • Participate in system testing, debug, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) activities
