About The Position

Thomas Built Bus designs, builds, and sells school buses for the American and Canadian markets, including Type C, Type D (front and rear engine variants), and Type A minibuses. This role is focused on the design of the school bus bodies for these products, along with any related testing and compliance. Successful candidates will apply theoretical principles, engineering techniques, and practical experience to design vehicles that are safe, compliant, reliable, serviceable, energy efficient, competitive, and utilize the latest technology available in the industry.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering OR an Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years of related experience OR 6+ years of design engineering experience required
  • Demonstrated teamwork, strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with 3D CAD design required (Creo preferred)
  • An attached resume is required

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication processes i.e. press brake, roll forming, fasteners, stampings, etc. preferred
  • Ability to identify and solve problems on the assembly line preferred

Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering techniques and principles to design and develop school bus interior/exterior body components.
  • Apply CAD principles to develop 3D models, installations drawings and Bills of Materials.
  • Independently analyze and proactively provide creative, technically-feasible solutions to problems encountered in production.
  • Promptly resolve product build issues.
  • Collaborate with Production, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Fabrication, Quality and other departments to implement manufacturable and cost effective design solutions that meet government regulations and specifications.
  • Interface with Test & Compliance personnel to prototype new systems, perform development testing and apply test results to new designs.
  • Proactively inform middle management of project issues, delays and risks.
  • Research state-of-the-art developments in the vehicle industry and apply the latest advances and best practices as appropriate.
