About The Position

HD Fowler Company is looking to add an experienced full-time Mechanical Estimator to join our Estimating Division. This is not a remote work position. You will work full-time in-office in an HD Fowler branch that has a strong Mechanical/Plant work sales presence. City/State branch location TBD. Based location flexible with a strong preference for the following HD Fowler branch locations: Bellevue, WA, Vancouver, WA, Boise, ID or Spanish Fork, UT. You will primarily focus on providing exceptional material take-offs and quotes for Water and Water Treatment Plants, Pump Stations, Hatcheries, and other similar projects with “Mechanical” piping systems, as well as some complex mixed scope Waterworks projects. You must produce superior quotations for large and complex projects, procure and review competitive and accurate supplier quotes which offer the greatest chance of successful sales, and develop efficient project expedition and completion.

Requirements

  • To perform this job successfully, you must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • 5 years’ experience as a waterworks estimator with at least 2 years of that being focused on estimating WWTP / WTP Plant work for HD Fowler, a direct competitor, contractor and/or in a related field (specific industry experience required), with a proven track record of producing high output of high complexity and accurate estimates.
  • At least 1-2 years performing for HD Fowler as Inside Sales or Project Manager, or for external applicants, equivalent industry relevant project management experience.
  • Strong math and computer skills, as well as an eye for detail.
  • Has an exceptional and experienced understanding of both civil and mechanical piping blueprints including plan & profile views, elevations, details, etc.
  • Able to use discretion regarding pricing tools and all general decision making.
  • Can operate within and prioritize under tight deadlines.
  • Able to interact positively with all types of coworkers and customers with effective and professional written and oral communication.
  • Able to operate in a high-paced, demanding environment under a variety of conditions.
  • Available to work overtime when necessary and/or required.
  • Able to self-guide work prioritization and completion; work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Proficient experience with Planswift or equivalent online estimating software.

Nice To Haves

  • BS/BA in related discipline preferred but is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Independently complete accurate and thorough material takeoffs (including detailed attention to specifications, competitive pricing, freight costs, etc.), meeting deadlines and expectations of both company and customer in terms of both production and quality.
  • Find, qualify, and coordinate upcoming bids within the region, and proactively communicate with the sales team to design and implement successful bid strategies.
  • Thoroughly follow-up on all bids; assist with job tracking, updating bid board with low bidders, and/or coordinating all aspects of the bidding process with other staff.
  • Responsible for completing detailed and itemized material quantity estimates from owner or contractor furnished plan sets.
  • Work well with all external parties on all aspects of project bidding, including but not limited to project clarifications, value-added options and alternative material solutions, product specifications, and project design changes.
  • Communicate effectively with Sales and/or design engineers regarding project questions and conflicts, knowing who to appropriately discuss questions or concerns with.
  • Establish a professional and ethical rapport with key customers, vendors, and internal contacts to understand the overall market picture and stay aware of changing work and market conditions.
  • Help develop and maintain specification tools and resources for job efficiency and accuracy.
  • Be a company resource for product knowledge, operational expertise, training and mentoring, process improvements, and initiative/goal achievement.
  • Participate in personal professional development, including staying abreast of new or improved products and construction methods, successfully incorporating new knowledge into bids and team development.
  • Be procedural and reporting compliant.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
