About The Position

Mechanical Engineering Interns support UPT’s research and development efforts under the supervision of a Lead Engineer and/or Project Manager. Interns contribute to the design, analysis, testing, and documentation of mechanical systems and subsystems for defense, aerospace, and critical infrastructure applications. This role emphasizes hands-on R&D work in mechanisms, tribology, materials, and CAD, with exposure to the full early-stage engineering lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Ability to apply mechanical engineering fundamentals to research and development problems
  • Hands-on aptitude and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, changing R&D environment
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling and engineering drawings
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel and Word)
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Current student who has completed two or more years in a Mechanical Engineering program at an ABET-accredited university

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or experience in mechanisms, tribology, or materials engineering
  • Experience with 3D printing.
  • Interest in experimental testing, test plan development, and data analysis
  • Interest in functional coatings or coating deposition technologies

Responsibilities

  • Support R&D engineers with mechanical design, analysis, testing, and documentation
  • Develop and update CAD models and technical drawings
  • Assist with mechanisms, tribology, and materials evaluation and selection
  • Participate in prototype fabrication, laboratory testing, and data collection
  • Support test planning, execution, and analysis, including MIL-STD-level evaluations
  • Contribute to technical documentation and project planning activities
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineers on integrated R&D efforts
