About The Position

Merrick and Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer / Designer to support the mechanical Design, Construction Administration, and Commissioning of projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This person will be located at our client facility in Manhattan, Kansas (not a Merrick office). Requirements

  • A mechanical engineer with experience in mechanical building system engineering and construction administration for government, academic, and private clients.
  • Demonstrated On-site experience supporting construction administration activities
  • A minimum of eight (8) years related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-Accredited program.
  • Experience in aspects of mechanical building systems including planning, calculations, equipment selection, schematic design, production of construction documents (drawings and specifications), and construction administration.
  • Candidate shall have good verbal and writing skills and be able to interact effectively with clients and other employees and must have strong oral presentation skills.
  • Experience coordinating with owners and contractors, as well as the ability to lead project meetings are necessary skills.
  • Candidate shall be proficient in report writing including design reports, specifications, field reports, statements of work, work orders, etc..
  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate effective problem solving skills applying mechanical design principals.
  • Candidate shall be proficient in the use of design software to support construction administration phase activities.
  • Candidate must be able to travel and must possess a current passport. It is anticipated that this may include some international travel.
  • Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.
  • Candidate must have resided in the United States for the past 5 years.
  • Candidate must possess or be able to obtain federal government security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience in as many of the following areas as possible is an asset: HVAC, plumbing/process, fire protection and controls design.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer in Kansas, Georgia, Colorado or another U.S. jurisdiction is preferred. If the candidate is not currently licensed, they must demonstrate a plan and ability to obtain licensure within two years of joining Merrick.
  • Laboratory design and construction knowledge is an advantage.
  • Experience in commissioning of High Containment Laboratories, high-tech, or mission-critical facilities is considered an asset.
  • Experience with HVAC controls systems and protocols (e.g. JCI, Siemens, ALC, BACnet, Modbus, etc) is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Participating as part of the mechanical engineering team and the multi-disciplinary project team, execute the detailed mechanical, plumbing/process and controls engineering support of complex mechanical life science facilities, inclusive of: Detailed engineering calculations, engineering assessments and decision making
  • Generating design reports, field reports, statements of work, and work orders
  • Generating Specifications and system/equipment requirements
  • Supporting production of construction drawings and modeling
  • Engage in on-site Construction Administration activities, including performing site inspections, testing, and commissioning of equipment and facilities as required. This opportunity may expand to include travel within the United States and abroad.
  • Utilize excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with clients and other employees.
  • Develop and maintain expert level knowledge of applicable codes and standards for the design and construction of biocontainment facilities in the United States and internationally as required.
  • Develop and maintain expert level skills in required any software packages necessary to support the work activities.
  • Execute all work in accordance with Merrick and project specific Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Exercise excellent independent judgement and initiative to complete engineering, construction administration and site support tasks.
  • Work independently and in a team environment based at the client site in Manhattan, Kansas. Future opportunities may be available to take advantage of Merrick’s hybrid arrangement comprised of office, remote, and onsite work.
