Under general directions, you will be supporting the design, analysis, and development of superconducting magnets for particle accelerators. This role involves hands-on engineering work across design, simulation, R&D planning, procurement, coil fabrication, magnet assembly, magnet testing and data analysis. You will contribute to projects such as the Electron Ion Collider and participate in reviews by the Department of Energy (DOE). What your day-to-day as a Mechanical Engineer at Fermilab will look like: Perform mechanical design, analysis, and assembly of superconducting (SC) magnets for particle accelerators, including design analysis and fabrication of superconducting coils. Participate in and lead efforts related to structural design of SC magnets, perform R&D and apply feedback to the design. Participate in the writing and editing of design documentation such as requirements specifications, technical design reports, construction oversight and assembly (travelers). Understand the design and test results of similar SC accelerator magnets to optimize the design of new SC accelerator magnets. Participate in the overall optimization of new SC accelerator magnets collaborating with other scientists and engineers. Work in a team environment and under the supervision of a senior engineer. Provides technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates and technicians, as assigned.
