As a Mechanical Engineering Intern for Lunar’s Mechanical Design Team you will be responsible for failure analysis, design iteration and quality/manufacturing support within our revolutionary home energy products. Engineers at Lunar are hands-on and involved in a wide range of facets of the product, from applying fundamental physical principles in design to working with high-volume production suppliers. On a given day at Lunar, you’ll likely… Work back and forth with collaborators across the company to continuously refine and improve our understanding of how our products can create the greatest impact, get to market quickly, and operate reliably for our customers Brainstorm and evaluate new solutions, weigh pros and cons, and present recommendations to leadership Efficiently test ideas and designs: anything from back-of-the-envelope calculations to physical tests and multi-physics simulations Design high-performance, reliable, low cost parts and assemblies, employing a variety of high-volume manufacturing processes Create 3d models, drawings and other part specifications Create prototype parts or fixtures utilizing on-site resources including 3D printing, laser cutting, milling Define manufacturing processes and inspection methods Collaborate directly with part manufacturers to support prototypes and production hardware Engage with subject matter experts and material suppliers to build up a knowledge base on specific manufacturing processes

Requirements

  • Mechanical Design
  • Extensive experience in 3D Modeling software (e.g. Onshape, NX, Solidworks)
  • Fundamental knowledge of 2D Drawing creation and tolerancing (GD&T experience valuable)
  • Basic ability to analyze designs using Statics/Load Path Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, and Tolerance Analysis
  • Prototyping skills using 3D printing, machining, sheet metal bending, laser cutting, and general machine shop tools
  • Manufacturing Support
  • Ability to manage communication with multiple suppliers in parallel in a timely and organized manner
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers (domestic or international) to make product improvements during a production phase
  • Communication
  • Skilled at clear verbal and written communication including concise slide deck creation and email correspondence
  • Ability to generate detailed design documentation
  • Ability to give kind and direct feedback and receive feedback with an open mind

Nice To Haves

  • Experience communicating with component suppliers including Design for Manufacturing report review and First Article Inspection
