This position will be located at our Mission Systems sector in Woodland Hills, CA. The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman's Navigation, Intelligence, and Connectivity (NIC) division.

Requirements

  • A candidate must meet ALL of the below criteria.
  • The candidate must:
  • Be a student who is enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university and will be enrolled full time in Fall 2026
  • Be majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related STEM degree.
  • Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2026.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite) as well as Program Special access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite)

Nice To Haves

  • Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.0 or higher
  • Demonstrated experience with CAD design and modeling for aerospace grade components.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis and structural testing protocols.
  • Proficiency in using rapid prototyping tools and a basic understanding of additive manufacturing processes.
  • Understanding of MIL STD 810, MIL STD 461, or AS9100 quality systems.
  • Previous internship or project involvement in a defense or aerospace environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior mechanical engineers in the NIC division to design, analyze, and iterate on navigation and mission‑support hardware components.
  • Perform dimensional, material, and vibration analyses using engineering software such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Participate in rapid prototyping activities, 3‑D printing, and CNC machining to fabricate test articles and validate design concepts.
  • Conduct laboratory testing, including thermal, environmental, and structural tests, to verify compliance with aerospace and defense standards.
  • Compile detailed design documentation, bill of materials (BOM), and assembly instructions for internal review and production packaging.
  • Support hardware integration efforts with avionics and software teams, ensuring mechanical interfaces meet functional and safety requirements.
  • Contribute to cost, schedule, and risk assessments as part of the engineering project life cycle.
  • Engage in design reviews, provide constructive feedback, and refine models based on peer comments and test results.
