About The Position

Interstate Mechanical is looking for a Mechanical Designer in Training to join our growing team. This is an entry-level opportunity for individuals eager to build a long-term career in mechanical design within the construction and fabrication industry. In this role, you’ll gain hands-on experience developing 3D models, construction documents, and coordinated system layouts while working alongside experienced professionals. If you’re detail-oriented, motivated to learn, and ready to grow into a highly capable designer—this role is for you! This role is built as a growth pathway into a full Mechanical Designer position. You will: Build proficiency in SketchUp and 3D modeling Learn mechanical and plumbing system design fundamentals Develop spatial awareness and real-world modeling accuracy Gain exposure to construction practices and coordination Strengthen communication and teamwork skills Progress toward independently producing design solutions

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of HVAC, piping, or plumbing systems (preferred)
  • Familiarity with SketchUp or other 3D modeling software (a plus)
  • Basic Excel knowledge (a plus)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Willingness to learn and take direction
  • Coursework in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is helpful but not required
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing mechanical layouts for HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems using SketchUp
  • Collaborate with senior designers to translate concepts into coordinated models and drawings
  • Support project teams by interpreting construction documents, specifications, and submittals
  • Learn to work with customers to understand project needs and help design real-world solutions
  • Apply industry standards, codes, and best practices to design work
  • Maintain organized digital files and version control
  • Assist with takeoffs, measurements, and basic estimating
  • Participate in field observations to understand installation and constructability
