About The Position

While working with a multi-disciplinary team, the Mechanical Design Engineer will envision, model, design, develop, test, and benchmark the mechanical requirements of various types of gearboxes and speed reducers that are used by our customers in a wide variety of industrial and military applications. The person in this position will be involved in the complete life cycle management of the system solutions from concept to design, analysis, architecture, and implementation on the manufacturing floor. This role is based out of Springville, NY, and reports to the Engineering Manager of the Business Unit.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 3-5 years’ experience with mechanical design for industrial or military applications. This experience should include knowledge of steel/cast iron manufacturing processes such as milling, turning, grinding, broaching, and heat treatment.
  • SAP Experience (Microsoft D365 is preferred).
  • Experience with 3D modeling and 2D drafting software (SolidWorks is preferred).
  • DFMEA and PFMEA processes.
  • Prior Knowledge and use of GD&T applications.
  • Familiarity with Lean practices.
  • FEA analysis and/or gear design experiences.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001-2015.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Technical writing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical direction and application support to customers and Sales personnel.
  • Provide mechanical design-related technical support for our manufacturing and assembly departments.
  • Maintain existing and create new bills of materials, 3D models, 2D detail and outline drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Generate cost estimates used in design evaluations.
  • Manage the design and development of new and modified gear drives.
  • Perform application/design calculations related to torque, horsepower, and efficiency.
  • Use AGMA standards and gear design software to complete calculations related to gear tooth geometry, bending, and wear, as well as bearing life.
  • Utilize finite element analysis to validate the design of components and assemblies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to develop and validate new and modified gear drive designs.
  • Create QA inspection documentation for the first piece and ongoing component inspections.
  • Lead FMEA meetings with the goal of risk mitigation associated with new custom and modified designs.
  • Lead root cause analyses and subsequent corrective action implementation and effectiveness efforts.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring guidance to new Engineers.
  • Perform other engineering-related tasks as assigned by the Engineering Manager.
