Collins Aerospace has an immediate need for Principal Engineer, Mechanical Component Engineer within the supply chain engineering team. The Component Engineer is responsible for managing the life cycle of mechanical components used across avionics systems, engine controls, power systems, and other products manufactured by Collins Aerospace. Component Engineers at Collins Aerospace act as the technical expert in collaboration with key stakeholders in Product Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Program Management, Procurement, Obsolescence, Quality, and Supply Chain. Specific responsibilities may include consultation with design engineering on part selection, qualification of components, performing root cause investigation and corrective action implementation, addressing part shortages and obsolescence, and technology roadmap management. This role requires an engineer with significant background working with mechanical components. The site location for this role is in Windsor Locks, CT, but Rockford, IL would also be considered at the discretion of the hiring manager.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract
  • 5+ years experience as a Mechanical Component Engineer or Mechanical Designer with experience in assemblies or components
  • Experience with engineering materials and production methods relevant to them
  • Prior experience collaborating in a multi-functional environment (ex: field engineering, supply chain, suppliers, customers)
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 10%

Nice To Haves

  • Experience creating and assessing technical documentation relating to Configuration Control, Change Management, Trade Studies, Preliminary and Detailed Design artifacts, and supporting mechanical component sustainment efforts
  • Experience working with mechanical component obsolescence and product change notifications (PCNs)
  • Team Lead experience
  • 5+ years with Silicon Expert or Accuris (IHS) Industry toolsets
  • SAP and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) toolsets
  • Demonstrated customer service experience, working with both technical and non-technical individuals and leaders
  • Understand and follow processes for and procedures for component management

Responsibilities

  • Understand preferred technologies, sources of supply, and acceptance criteria for mechanical commodities used on assigned programs.
  • Apply techniques for the documentation and release of components, processes, technology roadmaps, and design guidelines associated with assigned programs.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend new components and manufacturers for new product design programs and for improving existing manufacturing process yields.
  • Connect the supply base with internal customers to develop optimal design solutions.
  • Analyze engineering and obsolescence prediction data for components.
  • Review Bill of Materials (BOMs) to ensure maximum health (technology, life cycle, source of supply, etc).
  • Perform Failure and Root Cause Analysis of high complexity and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide technical assistance for programs related to material verification resolution, specification or drawing exceptions, supplier issues, and manufacturing related issues.
  • General technical support related to mechanical components. This may include activities associated with Part Shortage Resolution, Obsolescence Management, Source Selection, Data Collection, and/or overall Data Analysis.
  • Actively contribute to, and participate in, projects as a team member or expert on call.
  • Lead complex projects to solve team or department level issues or process improvements.
  • Proactively identifies improvement opportunities and drives activity to make necessary changes.
  • Teach and mentor less experienced engineers on the team.
