About The Position

Works under the close supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent or Lead Mechanic. Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public. Assist in training vehicle maintenance new hires. Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City. Performs semi-skilled, skilled work in maintaining the vehicles in the City's fleet and mechanical equipment of the city. Carries out preventive maintenance tasks for all vehicles and mechanical equipment. Operates a variety of diagnostic scan tools and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools. Program vehicle modules with proper tooling. Maintain shop scan tools and update with new software when needed. Tests, services, and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment. Maintains equipment in vehicle maintenance shop. Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work. Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems on all types of equipment. May at times be required to work on hydraulics. Cuts metal and performs related work. Changes, repairs, and dispose of tires properly. Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles and performs needed repairs. Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement. Requisitions equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate. Maintains records daily; may include the preparation of reports and other specialized maintenance records (e.g. mechanical equipment). Maintain issued purchasing card and associated receipts. Required to be on call for one week and holidays on a rotating schedule. Attendance at work is an essential function of this position. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES : Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned. The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Requirements

  • This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
  • Pre-employment drug/alcohol test and physical & baseline audiometric examinations are required.
  • Extensive background checks required.
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license required with acceptable driving record for the past three years
  • A.S.E. certifications required within 9 months of hire date and maintain after acquiring.
  • Three (3) years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of automotive diesel engines, transmissions, gas engines, electrical systems and price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern automotive maintenance.
  • Work on snowplows and related equipment.
  • Must have a working telephone and be willing and able to be on 24 hour call; must be able to be at the Municipal Operations Center within thirty minutes after receiving a call or page.
  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion in a timely manner.
  • Complete all paperwork daily
  • Keep your work area clean and organized at all times.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
