About The Position

The Marine Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing a fleet of Subchapter T commercial passenger vessels, including both inboard and outboard engines (gasoline and diesel). This hands-on role involves mechanical diagnostics, structural fiberglass repairs, supervision of assigned technicians and vendors, and execution of small maritime fabrication and installation projects. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and thrives in a fast-paced marine environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training, trade school certification, or military experience in marine or mechanical systems strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on marine mechanical experience working with commercial vessels, including Subchapter T passenger vessels.
  • Proven experience maintaining and repairing both gasoline and diesel propulsion systems, including Yanmar marine diesel and Yamaha outboard engines.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and execute preventative maintenance schedules and corrective repairs across a multi-vessel fleet in active commercial service.
  • Strong understanding of vessel systems including propulsion, electrical, steering, fuel, bilge, and HVAC.
  • Experience working within a compliance framework that includes United States Coast Guard regulations, inspection cycles, and safety requirements.
  • Ability to manage and track parts inventory, work orders, and vendor service schedules in support of a centralized maintenance program.
  • Capable of working independently and making informed decisions under pressure to minimize operational downtime.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills to coordinate with captains, team leaders, regulatory authorities, and third-party service providers.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and safely navigate dock and vessel environments in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to support off-site or emergency vessel service needs.
  • Basic computer literacy for recordkeeping, log entries, email communications, and digital maintenance tracking systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a certified marine technician program (e.g., ABYC, NMEA, Yamaha Technical School, Yanmar Academy, or equivalent).
  • Experience supervising a small team of marine technicians or maintenance personnel in a commercial fleet setting.
  • 5+ years of experience maintaining and repairing inboard and outboard marine engines, including Yanmar diesel and Yamaha outboards.
  • Prior experience managing a comprehensive fleet maintenance plan using digital platforms (e.g., Helm CONNECT, Vessel Vanguard, or similar).
  • Proficiency in marine electrical diagnostics and repairs, including AC/DC systems, battery banks, alternators, shore power, and charging systems.
  • Skilled in marine plumbing systems, including fresh water, grey water, and fuel line installations and repairs.
  • Proficient in composite repair techniques, including fiberglass lamination, gelcoat application, and finish work.
  • Welding and fabrication skills (aluminum and stainless steel preferred).
  • Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard Subchapter T vessel inspection standards, safety equipment requirements, and operational readiness.
  • Strong understanding of dry dock planning and haul-out logistics.
  • Previous experience coordinating third-party vendors, shipyard services, or subcontractors for large-scale projects or refits.
  • Basic knowledge of maritime operations, scheduling, and vessel dispatch coordination.
  • Comfortable operating vessels for systems testing or post-repair sea trials (USCG MMC or state boating certification a plus).
  • CPR/First Aid certification or marine safety training (e.g., STCW, OSHA 10 Maritime) preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to train and mentor junior staff.
  • Ability to read and interpret engine service manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Familiarity with parts sourcing, inventory management, and procurement processes.
  • Experience working in busy marine environments such as passenger terminals, shipyards, or waterfront construction zones.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, with a passion for safety, efficiency, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on inboard and outboard engines (gas and diesel), including Yanmar marine diesel and Yamaha outboard engines.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on propulsion, electrical, steering, cooling, and fuel systems.
  • Supervise and mentor an assigned Marine Technician, ensuring work is completed safely, correctly, and on schedule.
  • Oversee third-party vendors during contracted maintenance, repairs, inspections, or upgrades.
  • Execute small-scale maritime projects including systems upgrades, equipment installations, and light fabrication.
  • Carry out fiberglass structural repairs using proper composite techniques and marine-grade materials.
  • Interpret and implement technical manuals, schematics, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, time logs, and materials used.
  • Ensure compliance with USCG regulations for Subchapter T vessels and assist in inspection readiness.
  • Adhere to all company safety procedures and ensure safe practices by all supervised personnel.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-equipped work area.
