About The Position

Join our team and play a key role in keeping our operations running smoothly. The primary purpose of the Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II (Mechanic) position is to maintain and repair the motor vehicles owned by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) and other state law enforcement agencies that utilize Troop C Garage as their place for service. The work location is Raleigh, NC (Wake County)

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Responsibilities

  • Performing regular preventive maintenance every 6,000 miles and diagnosing and repairing motor vehicle problems on NCSHP and other state law enforcement vehicles.
  • Completing warranty repairs on new motor vehicles within the coverage mileage and date, repairing and correcting motor vehicle recalls issued by the manufacturer and verifying repairs by test driving the motor vehicle.
  • Installing NCSHP equipment on new motor vehicles for issuance to enforcement members and removing equipment from motor vehicles taken out of service.
  • Installing aftermarket emergency equipment and decals on NCSHP vehicles.
  • Reading and interpreting Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals and using diagnostic tools to diagnose and determine the best course of action for complex system repairs.
  • Performing general automotive checks and repair in the following areas: alignment, brakes, climate control systems, drive train, engines, transmission repair and rebuild.
  • Troubleshooting complex vehicle repairs using the proper tools, resources, equipment and training.
  • Utilizing a rollback wrecker to transport NCSHP and other agencies' vehicles.
  • Utilizing specific software programs developed by Ford, GM or Chrysler to troubleshoot routine and complex vehicle repairs.
  • Identifying problems, determining possible solutions and actively working to resolve issues.
  • Performing duties while exerting moderate to heavy physical energy, with expectations of standing for the majority of the day.
  • Delivering a high level of comfort and trust to law enforcement personnel during daily operations and special assignments.
  • Maintaining a safe and clear work area conducive to efficient operations and following all OSHA and State regulations pertaining to motor vehicle repair.
