General Position Summary The Mechanic Lead is responsible for repairing and maintaining equipment, conducting quality control analysis, training maintenance staff and ensuring all work complies with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. This role requires advanced knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance. The position operates under flexible parameters with a primary goal of achieving excellence in safety, quality, and efficiency. Highâquality work reduces accidents and errors while increasing operational performance and profitability. Essential Functions Environmental, Health & Safety (H&S) Adheres strictly to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Maintains a safe environment for employees, customers, and visitors. Operational Performance & Best Business Practices Repair and replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery and equipment. Maintain and restore the operating condition of industrial production and processing equipment. Reassemble equipment following inspections, testing, or repairs. Operate newly repaired machinery to verify adequacy of repairs. Document all repairs and maintenance performed. Test equipment to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturer specifications. Perform routine maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments. Read and interpret operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings. Diagnose faults or malfunctions using computerized diagnostic equipment and calibration devices. Training & Development Train, mentor, and support maintenance staff and less experienced mechanics in proper repair techniques, safe work practices, and company standards. Provide handsâon instruction in diagnostics, preventive maintenance, equipment operation, and repair procedures. Assist in developing training materials, demonstrations, and skillâbuilding sessions. Monitor trainee progress and communicate performance gaps or training needs to management. Serve as a technical resource, sharing advanced troubleshooting methods and best practices. Special Projects Assist throughout the yard as needed. Perform special projects as assigned. Job Conditions This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions and physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt. Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, and face shields must be worn as required. Workload may be unpredictable, with increased pressure during peak periods. Critical deadlines require adaptability. Irregular work schedules and occasional extra hours, including weekends and holidays—may be required. Physical Requirements Ability to: stand for up to 12 hours a day; lift and carry up to 100 pounds occasionally; crouch or bend at the knees occasionally to increase visibility; stoop or bend at the waist occasionally to increase visibility; reach at arms length frequently or overhead occasionally; twist and turn at the neck and trunk; walk frequently on uneven ground; handle and grasp tools and parts continually; communicate by speech and hearing continually. Visual acuity (near and far vision) needed for vehicular navigation. Mental dexterity needed as Mechanic Lead will work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness. Qualifications High School diploma or GED required with five years of experience assisting skilled tradespersons in heavy equipment repair and maintenance. Candidates with an Associate’s degree in Heavy Duty Truck or Heavy Equipment Repair and two years of relevant experience may be considered. Experience developing and delivering technical or safety training with demonstrated experience mentoring or training maintenance personnel. Proficiency with advanced diagnostic tools and electronic troubleshooting systems. Strong understanding of preventive maintenance programs and scheduling. Ability to lead complex repairs involving hydraulics, electrical systems, welding, fabrication, or powertrain components. Strong communication and documentation skills. Demonstrated ability to coordinate workflow and prioritize repairs during highâdemand periods.
