About The Position

The City of O'Fallon is seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanic I or Mechanic II to join our Fleet Maintenance team. This position plays a key role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and readiness of our city vehicles and equipment, with a special emphasis on police vehicle upfitting , including installation and troubleshooting of lights, wiring, and emergency equipment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of city and departmental policies, including safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair practices.
  • Knowledge of mechanical diagnostic procedures.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, electrical, and brake systems.
  • Skill in repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Specialized training in vehicle or equipment maintenance, plus a high school education. (Mechanic I)
  • At least 1–2 years of related experience, typically through an apprenticeship, internship, or similar role. (Mechanic I)
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Missouri driver's license appropriate for assigned equipment.
  • An associate degree in vehicle or equipment maintenance and two ASE certifications from Series A, E, F‑1, G‑1, or L, with maintained competency, or Five ASE certifications from Series A, E, F‑1, G‑1, or L, with maintained competency. (Mechanic II)
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Missouri driver's license appropriate for assigned equipment. (Mechanic II)

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs all assigned vehicles, equipment, and systems.
  • Performs police vehicle build-outs, including installation of lighting, wiring, and specialized equipment.
  • Fabricates parts, performs welding repairs, and makes needed modifications.
  • Tracks and pays invoices related to assigned vehicles or jobs.
  • Maintains and repairs snow equipment.
  • Maintains assigned tools, equipment, and a clean, safe work area.
  • Transports vehicles to and from contract repair providers.
  • Maintains parts inventory and sources parts from vendors.
  • Maintains required records.
  • Assists in snow removal operations.
  • May be required to respond to emergency call-ins, perform callback work, or work beyond scheduled hours when necessary.
  • Assists as a Quality Control Mechanic. (Mechanic II Only)
  • Learns, assists, and leads efforts in vehicle diagnostic systems. (Mechanic II Only)
  • Performs shop control duties in the Fleet Coordinator's absence. (Mechanic II Only)
