About The Position

The City of Pontiac Mayoral Fellowship is a high-impact, hands-on professional development opportunity for emerging leaders, graduate students, and early‑career professionals committed to public service. Fellows work closely with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Chief of Staff, and senior leadership team to support strategic initiatives that improve city services, strengthen neighborhoods, and grow opportunities for residents. Fellows gain direct experience in municipal operations, policy development, program management, communications, and cross-department collaboration while contributing to projects that shape Pontiac’s future.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in public service, government leadership, or community development.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze information and present clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in or completion of a degree program in Public Policy, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Political Science, Law, Business, Communications, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in government, nonprofit work, political offices, or community initiatives.
  • Familiarity with the City of Pontiac or Southeast Michigan.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research, data collection, and analysis to support the mayor’s policy priorities.
  • Assist with program design, implementation, and performance tracking for city initiatives.
  • Support community engagement efforts, including neighborhood meetings, public presentations, and constituent outreach.
  • Collaborate with city departments on cross-functional projects (housing, economic development, youth recreation, infrastructure, etc.).
  • Perform other related duties in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
