About The Position

The Department of Public Safety's mission is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people of North Carolina through preparation, prevention, and protection with integrity and honor. The agency houses many public safety divisions, including Emergency Management, Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Samarcand Training Academy, and the North Carolina National Guard. The agency has more than 3,000 employees and 12,000 National Guard members. This position is a 12-month, full-time role within Lenoir Youth Development Center, focused on teaching Mathematics courses to students in grades 6-12. The teacher will be responsible for planning lessons based on NC Standards and students' individual learning needs, ensuring student success through engaging activities and research-based strategies. The role also involves utilizing data for instructional activities, implementing IEPs, and maintaining student records. This position is a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan for student services and treatment.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid North Carolina teacher license, "A" or "M", with teaching certification in the area of Mathematics (middle school) or Mathematics (high school) or be eligible for a NC Teacher License through an alternative licensing pathway offered by NCDPI
  • Have a four year college degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution

  • Experience in creating lessons that coincide with Common Core State Standards and NC Essential Skills in order to improve student achievement

Responsibilities

  • Planning lessons based on the NC Standards and student’s individual learning needs
  • Ensuring success with all students while providing appropriate and engaging activities to teach concepts
  • Providing research-based strategies and interventions to provide an appropriate education for all students
  • Utilizing data to inform all instructional activities based on NC Standards

  • Keeping all student records, exceptional children's program and other paperwork, and student progress up to date
  • Serving as a member of the interdisciplinary team in order to plan for student services and treatment
