About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, and has approximately 17,000 employees. It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. The Maternal Health (MH) Epidemiologist supports data collection, analysis, and evaluation activities that inform and strengthen maternal health initiatives. This position identifies, analyzes, and interprets public health data to guide decision‑making, fulfill reporting requirements, and meet program deliverables. The role manages and analyzes data from multiple sources to monitor maternal health outcomes, identify disparities, and assess the impact of innovation‑focused programs. The position compiles, maintains, and reports data to improve maternal health outcomes and contributes to program evaluation and continuous quality improvement. The MH Epidemiologist also serves as the lead epidemiologist for the Maternal Health Innovation (MHI) Program, which advances statewide initiatives aimed at expanding access to care, enhancing data capacity, and implementing interventions addressing maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Epidemiology or closely related health field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of related experience OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience applying epidemiologic methods with intermediate to expert proficiency, including conducting surveillance, performing statistical analysis, and interpreting maternal health outcome data.
  • Proven skill using statistical software and programming languages to manage, transform, and analyze complex public health datasets, including producing reproducible analytic outputs for reporting.
  • Strong proficiency compiling and maintaining data from multiple sources to monitor maternal health indicators, track disparities, and support evaluation of public health interventions.
  • Demonstrated experience translating analytical results into clear and actionable insights through written reports, presentations, and data visualizations tailored to non‑technical audiences.
  • Effective collaboration experience working with internal teams, local health departments, health care providers, and external partners to improve data quality, enhance data integration, and support program decision‑making.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and manage maternal health data from multiple sources to support surveillance and program monitoring.
  • Analyze public health datasets to identify maternal health outcomes, disparities, and trends requiring program attention.
  • Interpret epidemiologic findings to support decision‑making, reporting requirements, and program deliverables.
  • Compile, maintain, and produce data summaries and reports that support maternal health program activities and statewide initiatives.
  • Evaluate maternal health programs by assessing effectiveness, identifying areas for improvement, and supporting continuous quality improvement processes.
  • Lead epidemiologic activities for the Maternal Health Innovation (MHI) Program to enhance data capacity and strengthen maternal health initiatives.
  • Monitor the impact of innovation‑focused interventions intended to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce disparities.
  • Coordinate data‑related efforts with program partners to ensure timely, accurate reporting aligned with program goals.
  • Support program staff in understanding data needs, study findings, and evaluation results that inform maternal health efforts.
  • Contribute to the design and refinement of maternal health data processes that strengthen statewide maternal health initiatives.
