About The Position

The Materials Laboratory Technician 1/2/3/4/Journey (MLT) will be part of a team in the DOT&PF Central Region Materials Section Lab that works cooperatively to perform materials testing in support of Highway and Aviation design and construction projects. The incumbent will be overseen by senior technicians as they perform designated tests in the areas of soils/aggregates, concrete/cement, bituminous mix/asphalt materials, and/or special products. Our department's mission is to "Keep Alaska Moving", while our division's core mission is to develop, design, and advertise projects that preserve and improve Alaska's transportation and public facilities infrastructure. The division also provides a wide range of technical services to the department, other state and federal agencies, local governments, utility companies, and the public. Our department is mission focused with an organizational atmosphere that delivers performance based results, promotes excellence, integrity, teamwork, and service that benefits the public. The Central Region Materials Section consists of a 20-plus member team of Geotechnical Engineers, Engineering Assistants, Engineering Geologists, and Lab staff who work cooperatively to support Highway and Aviation Design & Construction projects. The incumbent will be an integral part of this team by performing materials testing in support of these projects. The incumbent will enter into an apprenticeship program where they will continually gain experience in performing materials testing under the supervision of senior technicians until they reach Journey level proficiency. This position offers full time seasonal work, with the potential for year round employment, and paid overtime. The Central Region Materials Lab is located at 5750 East Tudor Road in Anchorage, which is a satellite office to the regional branch located at 4111 Aviation Avenue. Daily work is centric to performing various materials testing utilizing standard testing equipment, completing lab forms, using computer testing software, and inspection, maintenance, and calibration of testing equipment.

All MLT's need to achieve and maintain Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) and National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) credentials.
Requires proficiency in basic mathematics, reading comprehension, and computer skills.
Possesses ability to handle continuous physical labor with loads of up to 60 kg (130 lbs).
Valid Driver's License is required.
