Overview Materials testing laboratory, located in Mooresville, NC is seeking an entry-level materials Laboratory Technician. The company is firmly established as a recognized leader in failure/root cause analysis, corrosion damage assessment, weld/welder qualification testing, and consulting engineering. Our clients are typically from the commercial, industrial, and forensic workspaces from a wide range of industries including performance (motorsports, aerospace, marine, automotive/transportation), manufacturing, industrial (power generation and utilities, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, pulp and paper), and forensics (insurance and litigation support).

Requirements

  • Associate degree or Trade School accreditation is preferred but may be substituted with work experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Must possess the ability to understand departmental operations and procedures.
  • Must have good organizational skills as well as analytical and interpretive skills.
  • Should have the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and set priorities.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to meet or exceed performance competencies.
  • Must have dependable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate fork-lift and shop machinery (including but not limited to band saws, milling machines, lathes, grinders, belt sanders, mounting presses, cut-off saws, furnaces, air compressors, etc.) in compliance with safety program/safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment (including but not limited to cameras, tensile testers, hardness testers, micro-hardness testers, chemical analysis OES, metallographs, stereomicroscopes, auto-polishers, sample preparation polishing wheels, fume hoods, ultrasonic cleaners, Charpy impact testers, salt-fog chambers, dye penetrant and magnetic particle equipment, replication materials, etc.)
  • Ability to clean, maintain, and repair lab equipment and tools, including maintaining supply inventories.
  • Assist engineers/project managers with day-to-day operations and in conducting project examinations.
  • Operate lab equipment in accordance with the quality assurance program/QA procedures.
  • Ability to utilize various computer software (including but not limited to lab equipment software, project management/billing databases, Microsoft Suite, Lightroom, etc.)
  • Produce standard test reports.
  • Applicant must be able to pass random drug screens as required by our clients to perform onsite inspections and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing on a wide variety of projects, handle the coordination of project storage, provide assistance to project managers/engineers/consultants, and assist with general project management tasks.
  • This position occasionally requires direct client interaction/observation while performing laboratory testing.
  • The coordination of project storage will consist of cataloging, organizing, and documenting the status of various items stored at our testing facility.
  • Assistance to project management/consulting staff includes, but is not limited to, operating laboratory equipment, training to use new equipment, and performing all lab testing under the direction of the project manager.
  • Perform routine laboratory testing, such as: macro and micro photography, mechanical testing, Charpy impact testing, chemical analysis, hardness testing, etc.
  • Operate polishing equipment to prepare metallographic specimens for microstructural analysis.
  • Perform general shop clean-up and equipment maintenance including equipment clean-up, minor repairs, and filing project inventory.
  • This position will work with limited supervision, exercising initiative and independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks.
