About The Position

"Ahead of Ready" Space is a critical domain, connecting our technologies, our security, and our humanity. While others view space as a destination, we see it as a realm of possibilities, where we can do more — we can innovate, invest, inspire, and integrate our capabilities to transform the future. At Lockheed Martin Space, we aim to harness the full potential of space to cultivate innovation, reduce costs, and push the boundaries of what technology can achieve. We’re creating future-ready solutions, focusing on resiliency and urgency through our 21st Century Security® vision. We’re erasing boundaries and forming partnerships across industries and around the world. We’re advancing spacecraft and the workforce to fuel the next generation. And we’re reimagining how space can connect us, ensuring security and prosperity. Join us in shaping a new era in space and find a career that's built for you. This impactful position will work in a small group, hands-on laboratory environment performing testing and analysis on materials and electro-mechanical hardware for missile systems and satellites. A wide range of materials are encountered including composites, metals, polymers, and ceramics. The efforts are vital to ensure the quality of incoming products, verify manufacturing processes, perform failure analysis, and support exciting engineering evaluation / research and development projects. Specific initial responsibilities will include vendor test data sheet review for incoming material products, prohibited materials analysis using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, performing mechanical testing on adhesives and other materials using an Instron test frame, sampling and testing for contamination using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and engaging other sites in our lab organization to help document and implement common practices across the lab organization. In time, we need this engineer to learn and apply all on-site lab capabilities including computed tomography (CT) scanning, scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), a variety of digital light microscopes, and sample preparation / metallography (grind/polish/etch with chemicals). Future work is also expected to include composition and pH monitoring of chemical processing tanks. All work will be performed and documented using lab instructions and procedures. This includes using our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to capture results and written reports. He/she will be expected to engage with internal lab customers and other lab team members daily while also being able to work independently to perform needed tasks to support our nationally important, high-technology programs.
