We are currently seeking a Materials Engineer (Ph.D.) for our Materials Science and Electrochemistry Practice in Natick, MA. In this role, you will work as part of a team conducting materials engineering and scientific analyses to assist Exponent's clients across multiple industries, particularly including consumer products and construction materials. Projects can range from failure investigation of materials issues with products/components in the field or during development to materials selection and reliability behavior, applying fundamental materials engineering principles. With the support of all of Exponent's diverse expertise in polymers, materials chemistry, metallurgy, and mechanical engineering, to name a few, we touch on nearly every aspect of our clients' products.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. and Bachelors in Materials Science and Engineering or a related field
  • Strong understanding of ceramic material (including glass), fracture, and degradation mechanisms
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, FTIR, XRD,)
  • Ability to adapt expertise to new industries and work outside core areas
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to contribute proactively in team settings
  • Familiarity with failure analysis methodologies and root cause investigations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical and client-facing reports
  • The ideal candidate demonstrates a proactive approach to their work, anticipates challenges, and takes ownership of projects

Responsibilities

  • Conducting failure analysis of glass and ceramics, composites, metals, polymers
  • Performing materials characterization and fracture analysis
  • Designing and executing laboratory experiments and field inspections
  • Applying scientific principles to solve complex engineering problems
  • Preparing technical reports and presenting findings to clients
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on investigations and product evaluations
