About The Position

The Material Handler 2 is an individual contributor. This person must be a highly driven individual that is responsible for transporting products and materials within the manufacturing areas and maintaining material storage as directed by manufacturing and inventory control procedures. This position will also perform miscellaneous material handling, as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Previous Forklift certification or the ability to acquire a forklift certification.
  • If applicable based on location, ability to operate overhead cranes and acquire overhead crane certification.
  • If applicable based on location, ability to operate hand and banding tools
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines associated with working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and interpret work instructions, drawings, and/or blueprints.
  • Previous experience using a tape measure and gauges to accurately measure parts and materials.
  • If applicable based on location, ability to work outside in extreme heat or cold.
  • If applicable based on location, must be accurate in logging inventory transactions
  • The ability to work overtime when required for business needs
  • Ability to physically lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • 6 months on-the-job experience operating a forklift within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • A person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
  • Inventory control experience.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Ability to solve problems with high attention to detail and work in a fast-paced environment subject to specific deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize all safety devices, wear all mandatory personal protective safety equipment, and adhere to all Valmont safety policies. Lead by example to promote and nurture a safety minded environment.
  • Operate with proper priorities, safety first, quality, then delivery and cost
  • Supply manufacturing workstations with materials from storage inventory locations. Locate and gather parts. Place materials in their proper storage inventory location.
  • Write part descriptions and quantity on outer boxes, as needed.
  • Receive incoming material shipments. Load and unload trucks, as needed.
  • Report material damages and shortages to Lead, Shift Supervisor, Manufacturing, Operations Manager &/or Plant Manager
  • Verify material and product inventory levels; if applicable based on location, also assist with cycle counts.
  • Support improvement efforts and seek continuous improvements within the Production department.
  • If applicable based on location, use overhead crane to load/unload machinery.
  • Other duties as required and/or assigned.
  • Galvanizing sites only: This individual will prepare, process and store materials before and after the galvanizing process. Key duties include hanging and unhanging parts as well as cleaning up parts. Inspect and identify production fixtures, chains, and hooks to ensure proper repair or discarding of unsafe items
  • If applicable based on department, perform paddling functions at the kettle including the use of air guns.
  • If applicable based on the department, the Material Handler may work around chemicals such as acids, caustics, and zinc used in the galvanizing process. Safe handling procedures, proper PPE use, and compliance with all federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations is required.
  • If applicable based on the department, the individual is required to work safely while wearing the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which includes the use of a respirator or Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR). Compliance with OSHA standards requires the successful completion of a medical questionnaire, training and a respirator fit test, which may necessitate trimming or removing facial hair that interferes with the proper seal of the respirator.
  • The employee must maintain a safe and productive work environment producing a quality product which is shipped complete and on time to satisfy the needs of the customer.
