About The Position

The Material Handler (Forklift Operator) is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of materials, tools, and parts throughout the forge plant. Operating primarily a forklift, this role involves loading, unloading, transporting, and storing materials such as metal baskets, tools, and equipment, ensuring they are delivered to the appropriate production areas in a timely manner. The Material Handler plays a critical role in supporting production operations, maintaining inventory flow, and ensuring materials are readily available to meet production demands.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Training on company-specific material handling procedures, forklift operation, and safety standards.
  • Ongoing training to ensure safe, efficient, and effective forklift operations.
  • 1-2 years of experience operating a forklift or in a material handling role, preferably in a manufacturing or forge shop environment.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and operate a forklift for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional lifting of materials or baskets weighing up to 50 lbs, or more with assistance or mechanical aids.
  • Frequent walking, bending, reaching, and twisting while moving or positioning materials.
  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, occasionally moving large baskets or tools by hand or with assistance.
  • Ability to work in a plant environment with varying temperature conditions, including exposure to heat from the forge operations.
  • The role is primarily performed in a forge plant, which may be exposed to heat, dust, fumes, and high noise levels.
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions when handling materials or working in the yard/loading dock.
  • Must adhere to company-provided safety standards and wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots, gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses, as required.
  • Attention to Detail: Able to follow material handling instructions carefully and ensure proper storage, rotation, and tracking of materials.
  • Safety-Conscious: A strong commitment to safety standards in forklift operation, material handling, and plant protocols.
  • Team-Oriented: Ability to work effectively with the production, warehouse, and logistics teams to meet production needs and timelines.
  • Communication Skills: Able to communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and other departments regarding material availability and handling.

Responsibilities

  • Forklift Operation:
  • Operate a forklift to transport baskets of materials, finished parts, and tools to various areas of the forge plant.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks, pallets, or storage locations, ensuring proper placement and stability.
  • Safely maneuver forklift in high-traffic areas, ensuring safe passage of goods and avoiding collisions with people or machinery.
  • Transfer materials to and from designated storage areas, production lines, and shipping areas, ensuring materials are always accessible when needed by the production team.
  • Move material baskets, raw materials, and finished goods to specific areas as per production schedules or departmental requirements.
  • Assist in managing and organizing material storage to maximize space and ensure materials are easily accessible.
  • Assist in keeping track of material movements, including unloading, restocking, and storing materials according to inventory needs.
  • Perform routine checks and basic maintenance on the forklift to ensure it is in good working condition (e.g., checking fluid levels, tire pressure, battery charge).
  • Follow all safety protocols for material handling, forklift operation, and plant safety standards.
  • Adhere to safe lifting techniques and use proper lifting equipment when necessary to move materials manually.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including storage areas, aisles, and material handling equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with production teams and supervisors to ensure materials are available and properly delivered.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, material shortages, or potential safety hazards to the supervisor or maintenance team immediately.
  • Assist in the coordination of material movements based on daily production needs and priorities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve material flow, storage, or handling processes and make recommendations for increased efficiency.
  • Strive to minimize material damage and improve the speed of material handling to support production timelines.
