About The Position

General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking to hire Material Handlers to support company growth driven by the Columbia Class Submarine Program within the South Yard Assembly Building. The Material Handlers will be responsible for the receipt, movement, storage, and logistics of shipboard as well as non-shipboard material within the South Yard Assembly Building. They will also be responsible for verification and recording of markings on delivered material, as well as packaging and ship-out of outgoing material. The selected individuals must have a strong work ethic, be detail-oriented, and possess a background of having worked in a fast-paced, dynamic industrial environment utilizing a variety of equipment such as carts, pallet trucks, and electric stackers. A background in Electric Boat business systems such as Electronic Desktop and Electronic Work Package (EWP), and an understanding of material control/protection policies, procedures, and best practices utilized within the Groton Shipyard, are required. Experience in the handling and protection of Special Emphasis and Level 1 material is expected.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED or 2+ years relevant technical experience
  • Less than 5 years of experience in material handling functions, use of hand and pallet trucks, and in the protection of shipboard material.
  • Must be available for all shifts.
  • Ability to physically lift parts and material weighing up to 40 pounds as well as push or pull pallet trucks and carts
  • Ability to qualify for electric walking stacker operation and for basic rigging qualifications
  • Ability follow written instructions and procedures and pay attention to details, including verbatim transcription of material identification markings
  • Must be computer literate
  • Must be able to use hand and portable power tools

Nice To Haves

  • Rigging experience with jib and boom cranes
  • Competence in blueprint reading
  • Should be able to work independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Movement of shipboard as well as non-shipboard material within the South Yard Assembly Building utilizing carts, pallet trucks, electric stackers, etc.
  • Receipt of incoming material, verification and documentation of material markings
  • Inventory and storage of material within the South Yard Assembly Building material buffers locations
  • Perform material movement transactions on computers using EWP systems
  • Packaging and protection of outbound material for ship-out and storage within Electric Boat warehouses
  • Coordinating deliveries and ship-out of material with transportation departments
  • Perform basic rigging functions to move material using cranes as needed
  • Removal of combustible materials such as pallets and other shipping materials from within the South Yard Assembly Building
