About The Position

Bay Systems Consulting is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Material Handler III to support the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA. This critical role is responsible for independently managing the daily flow of materials, supplies, and equipment in a fast-paced scientific research environment. The Material Handler III will perform a wide variety of shipping, receiving, inventory, and distribution tasks, including the handling of hazardous materials, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and customer service.

Requirements

  • 2+ years experience in a receiving environment utilizing industry-standard receiving software systems.   Thorough understanding and experience performing a variety of material handling duties in a Receiving environment.
  • Advanced level of computer knowledge and data entry experience using PC hardware and software in a Receiving environment.  Experience with e-mail systems, templates, and file directories is required.   Familiarity with Oracle, PeopleSoft, and or other similar receiving computer software is preferred.   Familiarity with barcode technology is preferred.
  • Journeyman level experience (minimum 2 years experience) in operating a wide range of motorized and non-motorized material handling equipment, including high-capacity forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies.  Ability to obtain LBNL forklift certification within the six-month probationary review period.  Ability to maintain LBNL forklift certification.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Department of Transportation hazardous material handling regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with very little direction and set priorities for incoming work.
  • Good interpersonal skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to function in a professional customer-service oriented manner.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds maximum unassisted; ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds for 10 to 15 feet.  Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, push, pull, and has manual dexterity in both hands.
  • Substantial organizational skills with an ability to work accurately with high attention to detail.
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license.
  • Possess advanced product knowledge of all materials associated with the research industry.
  • Knowledgeable in MS Word, MS Excel preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receipt Processing (40%) - Utilizing the PeopleSoft receiving programs, enters receipt information into the Receiving database.  Generates barcodes utilizing the iBox package tracking program.  For sensitive and/or high-volume items (> $10k), insures property control by assigning and affixing property numbers onto receipt item.  Data enters required Property Information (vendor, serial number, requester, location, etc.) into the AMS database.  For perishable items, insures that packages are properly refrigerated and assigned for same day delivery.  For hazardous shipments, insures that materials are properly manifested and segregated per DOT49CFR regulations.  Stages material for delivery by LBNL Transportation Unit.
  • Dock Assistance (30%) - Off loads and inspects incoming shipments from freight forwarders, ensuring that material is addressed properly and all counts match the driver's manifest.  Accurately annotates freight bill if damage or mishandling is observed.  Stages material on conveyor or carts according to size and/or urgency, with premium shipments given the highest priority.
  • System Contract Receipt (20%)- Performs receipt of material ordered on B2B System Contracts including Pacific's Supply and VWR.  Scans all material from the vendor truck onto Transportation carts utilizing the iBox receipt function.
  • Miscellaneous (10%) - Processes notification receipts for material that is delivered directly to requester.  Provides receipt status to requesters.  Assist in resolving vendor and Procurement order receipt problems.   Maintains files associated with material processed.  Under the guidance of the Mailroom Lead, may sort, deliver, and/or handle mail.
