About The Position

The Material Handler/Hardlines Production position plays an important role in supporting Goodwill's mission by receiving, processing, pricing, and stocking donated goods, helping maintain an organized, customer ready sales floor that supports sales and funds community programs. This role supports retail store operations by receiving donations, processing hardlines merchandise, and ensuring timely movement of product to the sales floor. Serves as a key role in production workflow by accepting and sorting donations, determining item disposition, pricing and tagging hardlines merchandise using the Celerant system, and stocking processed product safely and efficiently on sales floor. Identifies select merchandise appropriate for e-commerce and maintains organized, safe donation, processing, and sales floor areas in accordance with Goodwill policies and SOP guidelines.

Requirements

  • Job can be learned through on-the-job training and one-on-one supervision.
  • Ability to work efficiently and adjust priorities throughout the day based on donation volume, processing needs, production goals, cart flow, and rotation schedules.
  • Ability to sort, process, price, tag, transport, and stock hardlines merchandise while maintaining an organized, customer-ready sales floor.
  • Ability to use good judgement when handling and stocking merchandise for safety (e.g., heavy items low, clear aisles).
  • Ability to operate or learn required systems and equipment (e.g., Celerant system, carts, pallet jacks, or related tools as assigned).
  • Ability to provide excellent customer and donor service, including professional interactions and assistance as needed.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule and flexible hours Sunday through Saturday of each week.
  • Ability to professionally communicate and project a positive image of Goodwill to customers and donors.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions and follow merchandising and rotation direction.
  • Ability to read, write, and complete paperwork.
  • Ability to work independently and make responsible decisions.
  • Ability to stand and walk for eight (8) hours or more if necessary.
  • Ability to push/pull loaded carts safely over varying floor surfaces and around customers/fixtures.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally (team lift or assistance as needed), using safe lifting practices.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and twist frequently while stocking shelves, organizing product, and pulling merchandise.
  • Ability to place items at various heights, including reaching overhead and stocking heavy items on lower shelves safely.
  • Ability to grasp and handle a variety of merchandise (small items to bulky items) for production, stocking and recovery tasks.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace and maintain stamina while moving product continuously.
  • Must have satisfactory vision (close and distant) for safe navigation, reading tags/signage, and accurate production and stocking.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with donors, customers and coworkers in a retail environment (verbal communication/hearing).

Responsibilities

  • Greet donors courteously and assist with unloading donations; provide receipt upon request.
  • Perform initial inspection of donations to identify hazards, prohibited items, or trash.
  • Separate donated items to appropriate categories (textiles, hardlines, furniture) according to workflow standards.
  • Inspect hardlines for condition, safety, and completeness; determines appropriate disposition (sellable, recycle, or discard).
  • Determine appropriate price points and operate the Celerant system to select price points, print tags, and apply tags to hard goods.
  • Identify hardline items that may be better suited for e-commerce based on quality, brand, vintage, or uniqueness and route them appropriately.
  • Meet daily production quota/assigned targets while maintaining processing and pricing standards.
  • Transport carts of processed hardlines and furniture to the sales floor and stock merchandise safely and neatly.
  • Stock merchandise by category, keeping like items together.
  • Support hardlines rotation by pulling merchandise according to rotation schedules or quality standards.
  • Maintain a neat, organized, and customer-ready sales floor.
  • Follow safe lifting and material-handling practices; use PPE as required.
  • Keep donation, processing, and sales floor areas clean, organized, and free of hazards.
  • Participate as a team player and attend team meetings as required to improve customer/donor service, inventory flow, and operation processes.
  • Become familiar with Goodwill’s mission and programs in order to answer questions and provide information appropriately.
  • Follow all safety and security procedures and maintain a safe, orderly work environment.
  • May be assigned to assist in other work areas or perform additional duties as needed to support store operations.
