About The Position

Maintains equipment on a regularly scheduled basis. Responsible for all repairs and orders which may include departments other than Road and Bridge as well as special events during off hours such as county auctions, fair preparation, etc.. Field Service recovery and repair of equipment and vehicles at or in route to and from offsite job locations. Knowledge and ability to drive construction equipment, dump trucks as needed to assist in transporting materials or assist in emergency operations when additional drivers are needed. Assist in traffic control and clean up during traffic accidents involving county vehicles or equipment. Fabrication of “add on” accessories and welding repair of equipment and vehicles. Orders and picks-up parts as needed; Maintains current knowledge of updates on vehicles. Schedules inspections on vehicles and equipment. Supervises shop operations and maintains and repairs facility equipment such as gates, backup generators, water wells, wash bay and associated drainage on county property. Instructs, trains and assists mechanics; assigns work, ensures standards and priorities are met and checks completed work. Held accountable for all equipment used and uniforms issued. Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED; technical certification in different fields of mechanic training and vehicle maintenance. (extensive experience may substitute for technical certification)
  • 4 years job related experience as a mechanic.
  • Skills and Abilities: Strong heavy equipment repair and evaluation skills; good verbal and written communications and organizational skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to deal effectively with other employees, the public and elected officials; ability to complete assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Working knowledge of all Road & Bridge equipment.
