Job Summary Manages and maintains the supply and delivery of electricity and the installation and repair of all types of electrical equipment for the City of Dallas facilities and commercial building, venues, and other properties in a safe and efficient manner for all users. Job Description Overview The Master Electrician provides electrical expertise in the management, maintenance, and delivery of electricity and the installation and repair of all types of electrical equipment for the City of Dallas buildings properties and industrial equipment, including high voltage meters, utilities, traffic signals, airport equipment, and other relevant industrial facilities, in accordance with federal, state, and city codes updated by the latest edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) adopted by TDLR. May supervise and is immediately responsible for the work of more junior electricians and other assigned personnel.

Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of and ability to install, repair, and maintain large high voltage equipment, motors, and switch gear.
  • Expert knowledge of electrical codes and regulations.
  • Ability to supervise, lead, and provide technical expertise to other electricians.
  • Expert skill in making accurate estimates of time, materials, and labor required for installing equipment or making repairs
  • Superior ability to read various complex schematic diagrams and blueprints.
  • Subject matter expertise in use and instruction of various types of hand tools, power tools, precision testing and/or troubleshooting equipment.
  • Expert ability to understand technical terminology of the specialization assigned.
  • Expert skill in customer service and conflict resolution.
  • Superior skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Expert skill in establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships at all levels.
  • Six (6) years of experience in electrical work, of which two (2) years as a lead worker or in a supervisory capacity.
  • 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician; must have held a journeyman electrician license for at least two (2) years and successfully completed the master electrician examination.
  • Must have a valid Texas Class C driver’s license.
  • Must have a valid State of Texas or a reciprocal state Master Electrician License.
  • Subject to inclement weather conditions.
  • May be subject to evening and weekend shifts.
  • Must be able to assist with the installation of electrical work under no supervision.
  • Subject to varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and/or twenty-four/seven (24/7) emergency call out.

Nice To Haves

  • A Vocational Diploma or an associate degree in electrical conduits and/or electrical engineering, or a two (2)-year technical degree.

Responsibilities

  • Provides highest level electrical expertise and manages the installation and maintenance of all electrical services; plans, calculates, and follows electrical loads from blueprints, drawings or wiring diagrams to connect with electrical circuits and safely install electrical service.
  • Plans, schedules, manages, and assigns duties to crews based on priorities to meet the workload and ensure the work is completed efficiently; monitors scheduling to ensure all work orders and maintenance or repair requests are addressed; participates in personnel management, mediates conflicts, oversees timekeeping, and assesses performance.
  • Monitors and inspects the work performed by teams of more junior electricians to ensure compliance with the Electrical Code, City Ordinances, OSHA regulations, and related standards; identifies issues or non-compliant work, addresses problems related to safety, and conducts training when needed.
  • Designs and executes an electrical preventive maintenance program and employs energy conservation measures to help prevent breakdowns of electrical equipment; conducts and attends construction meetings to ensure appropriate electrical standards are followed.
  • Estimates and plans, assigns work, materials, and power that will be needed to remodel, repair and/or upgrade electrical systems; ensures each project has the appropriate crew and equipment to complete the work; and monitors equipment inventory, supplies, and materials; gathers quotes and collaborates with contractors and other vendors.
  • Locates underground lines for paving contractors, utility, and private companies to ensure no damage is done to underground signal lines; performs special services such as line location, relay testing, and motor surge testing.
  • Appears and testifies in court as an expert witness on behalf of the City of Dallas; provides electrical expertise and knowledge for various cases involving electrical systems or infrastructure.
  • Performs other work as needed or assigned.
