About The Position

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a Mass Spectrometrist to join its diverse community of Breakthrough Makers. This role is responsible for conducting high throughput quantitative analysis of metabolites in various biological matrices, primarily utilizing LCMSMS and GCMS, to support a clinical biochemical service. The position involves performing complex diagnostic tests, developing and validating analytical methods for metabolic disease biomarkers, steroids, and therapeutic drugs in accordance with CAP and CLSI guidelines. The Mass Spectrometrist will also be involved in training other staff, preparing technical documentation for publication and procedure manuals, attending professional conferences like ASMS, and presenting scientific findings at national levels. The role emphasizes continuous learning and participation in professional organizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related scientific field
  • At least six (6) years experience
  • 2 years experience using LC/MS/MS
  • Knowledge of computers
  • Ability to handle confidential materials
  • Communication, technical and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle and interpret data
  • Receive an annual influenza vaccine (if working in patient care buildings or having patient facing responsibilities)

Responsibilities

  • Accurately performs diagnostic tests or procedures of the highest complexity as assigned (advanced tech skill inventory) and reports results through appropriate channels.
  • Completes, evaluates and records all appropriate quality controls and quality assurance markers.
  • Activates troubleshooting procedures when necessary.
  • Demonstrate ability to independently execute laboratory experiments.
  • Assists in the development and validation of analytical methods for various metabolic disease biomarkers, steroids, therapeutic drugs and metabolites following College of American Pathologist (CAP) and Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines.
  • Responsible for assisting others by demonstrating expertise of advance experience and/or training (tech skill inventory) as necessary for laboratory operation.
  • Trains all levels of staff (fellow, researcher, tech specialist, med tech, etc) on high complexity testing procedures and equipment (LCMSMS, GCMS, etc), providing feedback to Manager.
  • Prepares technical documentation drafts for publication and/or procedure manuals.
  • Attends annual American Society for Mass Spectrometry conference (ASMS).
  • Prepares and presents technical education demonstrations to laboratory or medical staff.
  • May publish/present scientific presentations/papers at a national level.
  • Responsible for the continuing education of the section staff.
  • Assist the Manager with the preparation of competency assessment tools.
  • Identifies own learning needs with regards to new projects and partners with the director, CHOP resources or other outside sources for resources.
  • Participates in national and local professional organizations as permitted.
  • Successfully completes 12 units of approved continuing education activities during evaluation cycle.
